Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has approved the construction of 70 new secondary schools across the state and announced plans to provide electric motorcycles for teachers serving in rural communities, state officials said on Tuesday.
Radda made the announcements at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Government House in Katsina, an event postponed from the previous year due to scheduling constraints. He said the new schools are intended to expand access to education, reduce overcrowding, and improve learning outcomes.
According to the governor, the provision of electric motorcycles will complement existing rural incentive allowances and ease transportation challenges for teachers in hard-to-reach areas, with the aim of improving service delivery across the state.
Radda said education remains central to his administration’s agenda, adding that the 2026 state budget allocates a significant share to the sector for infrastructure development, teachers’ welfare, learning materials, and improved service delivery.
He also disclosed that, beyond new construction, the government is undertaking large-scale rehabilitation of existing school facilities to create a more conducive teaching and learning environment.
The governor said more than 7,000 qualified teachers were recruited in the last employment exercise to address staffing gaps in primary and secondary schools, and that preparations are underway for another round of recruitment to further improve student–teacher ratios.
Radda further announced plans to establish Teachers’ Development Centres in each of Katsina State’s three senatorial zones to provide continuous professional training, mentoring, and skills development for educators.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, said teachers honoured at the event were selected through a merit-based process that assessed classroom performance, dedication, innovation, community service, and overall impact.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Ummulkhairi, called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen the education sector, while representatives of parents, school associations, and community leaders commended the government’s focus on teacher welfare and recognition of excellence.
In recognition of outstanding service, the ministry presented merit-based vehicle awards to selected teachers and distributed learning materials to schools.
The event was attended by senior government officials, including the Head of the Civil Service, Falalu Bawale; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir; members of the State Executive Council; and leaders from the business community, according to the governor’s office.
